Successful candidate will be responsible for leading the Technology development Engineering Team in developing, defining and improving processes, materials and products as measured by customer satisfaction, safe execution, new process development, improvements to existing processes, quality consistency, and management of IRAD and Process Service project schedule and budget.
This position reports to the ASD Director of Technology Engineering. There are two positions at this level. One position has primary responsibility for process development and one has primary responsibility for materials and testing development. Existing and future projects will cross over lanes which requires close coordination and collaboration between the two positions.
R&D Engineering functional ownership includes Project Engineering, Internal and External Customer and Technical Interfaces. Candidate will be leading process engineers and scientists. This position is ultimately responsible for developing the technical solutions for new product pursuits and improvements to processes for existing programs to improve efficiency and reduce cost. Must be able to lead this group of over 6+ engineers to effectively meet division requirements for safety, quality, technical, and cost reductions. Candidate will need to closely coordinate support from other ASD Core Engineering organizations, and COE engineering functions of machine design, machine software control, facility engineering and tooling engineering, Candidate manages the tactical activities such as indirect and direct budgeting and staffing for current and future programs. Candidate will participate in in the development of technical roadmaps for the division and the development of research-oriented discretionary budgets as part of the strategic planning process.
Lead team of Process Development Engineers and scientists to develop, define and improve manufacturing processes, testing, and materials
Support successful manufacturing startup of major aerospace programs
Foster environment of cooperation and teamwork with other engineering and non-engineering disciplines and departments (operations, program office, business development, design and analysis engineering, quality engineering, tooling engineering, etc.)
Champion new technology objectives to support long-range business expansion
Coordinates Internal Research and Development budgets and Process Service budgets by forecasting annually and maintaining control of changes throughout the year to meet budget.
Partner with customers to achieve goals and deliver to technical requirements
Participate in the development of overall ASD technical strategies, objectives, and long-term goals of the organization
Advocate a safe and professional work environment
Manage execution of the project requirements to cost and schedule objectives
Provide challenging and stretching tasks and assignments to key talent in the organization

Drive timely and clearly communicated decisions and recommendations
Demonstrated ability to recruit, manage and develop a team of engineers
Excellent problem solving skills are a must as well as demonstrated experience in leadership of cross functional teams in resolving complex technical issues
Sound financial understanding, including capital management and make/buy decision processes
Knowledge of composite terminology, lay-up and cure processes, testing, machining methods and precision bonding and assembly processes
Excellent communication and technical presentation skills
Experience in new business pursuits from a technical basis including early customer involvement through proposal preparation and submittal
Understanding of process control through SPC process monitoring techniques
In depth knowledge of root cause and corrective action (RCCA) techniques (KT, 5 Why, Fish bone, fault tree)
Working knowledge of PFMEA and other advanced quality improvement tools
Proven experience in Lean Manufacturing and mentoring, coaching others in rapid problem solving and improvement
Ability to effectively maneuver through political situation and anticipate roadblocks
Minimum of 10 years of relevant aerospace manufacturing experience; with a bachelor’s degree in a classical engineering field or materials science.
3+ years’ experience leading technical/professional resources
- Ability to obtain DoD Secret Clearance
